Short answer: The winning stack for most Australian practices: Claude Pro for client comms, analysis, and reports (A$30/mo), Dext or Hubdoc for receipt capture (A$20-50/mo), and Xero’s built-in AI (already included). Everything else is specialist and optional.
Accounting is one of the highest-leverage sectors for AI right now — document-heavy, formulaic, and full of repeatable client comms. But most "AI for accountants" content is vendor fluff. This is what actually works, ranked by hours saved per dollar spent.
We’ve trained Australian practices from sole practitioners to 40-partner firms. This ranking is what we’d put in front of a practice manager without hedging.
The tools, ranked
Claude Cowork (Pro / Fable 5.1) Our pick
Price: A$30/mo Pro. Fable 5.1 from A$150/mo for whole-year synthesis on complex clients.
The single highest-ROI AI subscription for Australian accounting. Handles management-account narratives, budget variance analysis, client update letters, tax briefing summaries, ATO correspondence drafting, BAS review notes, and CGT computations explained in plain English for clients.
Voice guides in Projects mean every partner’s letters sound like them, not like generic AI output. Fable 5.1 handles whole-year data comfortably for year-end synthesis and long trial balances — useful for SMSF work and larger company files.
Best for
Any practice writing client emails, management commentary, tax notes, BAS reviews or year-end reports. Basically all of them.
Verdict
Anchor tool. Highest single ROI — every partner should have a licence.
Dext / Hubdoc
Price: A$20-50/mo per user depending on plan (Hubdoc is included with most Xero plans)
Receipt and invoice capture with AI extraction, direct to Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks. Solves the "clients emailing PDFs at midnight" problem with automation that actually works. Hubdoc is Xero’s own tool and ships free with most Xero Business plans; Dext is the standalone market leader.
Not new, not exciting, but among the top three time-savers a small practice can deploy. Pair with Xero or MYOB and half your bookkeeping admin evaporates.
Best for
Every practice doing bookkeeping or BAS prep. Non-negotiable at this point.
Verdict
Second essential subscription (or free, if you’re already on Xero).
Xero AI / MYOB AI Assistant
Price: Included with your existing subscription
Both platforms have quietly built substantial AI into 2026 releases. Xero’s Just Ask feature (built in Melbourne, naturally) and MYOB’s AI assistant both handle bank reconciliation suggestions, journal drafting, GST coding, STP checks and simple query resolution well.
Nothing to install, no extra subscription. If you’re on either platform — and in Australia you almost certainly are — spend 30 minutes learning what the AI features actually do. Most practices we work with are only using 10-20% of them.
Best for
Every practice already on Xero or MYOB — which is almost all of them.
Verdict
Free with what you already pay. Use it.
Caseware / CCH iFirm
Price: Enterprise pricing (typically A$150-250/user/mo depending on volume)
The most sophisticated compliance-tech platforms for mid-market and larger Australian practices. Automate working papers, year-end file preparation, audit workflows, and integrate with Xero/MYOB/Reckon for standardised output across the firm. Both are widely used by CA ANZ and CPA Australia firms.
Overkill for a 1-3 partner practice. Genuinely transformative for a 15+ partner firm doing hundreds of year-ends or SMSF audits. If you’re in the middle, the ROI calculation depends heavily on how standardised your year-end and compliance process already is.
Best for
Mid-to-large Australian practices (15+ staff) doing volume compliance or audit work.
Verdict
The right answer for larger firms. Not for sole practitioners.
BGL Simple Fund 360 / CAS 360
Price: Bundled per-fund / per-entity pricing
BGL is the Australian SMSF and corporate compliance stalwart. Simple Fund 360 dominates the self-managed super fund space, and CAS 360 handles ASIC company secretarial work. Both shipped meaningful AI features through 2025-26 — automated data entry from bank feeds, anomaly detection in fund transactions, and review-and-approve workflows for annual returns.
If you touch SMSF or company secretarial work, talk to your BGL account manager about what AI features are actually in your current tier. Most practices are paying for AI they don’t know they have.
Best for
Practices doing SMSF administration or company secretarial work — which in Australia is most of them.
Verdict
Audit what you have before buying more.
ChatGPT Plus / Team
Price: A$30/mo Plus. ~A$38/user Team.
Comparable to Claude Pro on price. Weaker on tone-controlled letter drafting and long-document work, but stronger on code (if anyone in the practice does spreadsheet macros) and image generation (marketing collateral).
Fine as an alternative to Claude Pro; not our first pick for practice-wide deployment.
Best for
Practices whose principal already prefers ChatGPT and doesn’t want to switch.
Verdict
Solid alternative to Claude. Pick one; running both rarely earns its cost.
Otter / Fathom / Fireflies
Price: A$25-45/mo
Client meeting transcription. For most practices, client meetings are underdocumented and the follow-up email is the second-biggest source of admin evenings. Fix both with one tool.
Pair with Claude to turn a transcript into a client update letter + internal file note + follow-up task list in five minutes.
Best for
Any practice where partners spend more than 5 hours a week in client meetings.
Verdict
Third subscription worth adding. Real time saver.
What we’d actually recommend
For a typical Australian small-to-mid practice: Claude Pro (A$30/mo) + Dext or Hubdoc (A$20-50/mo) + whatever’s already in Xero/MYOB/your compliance suite. Under A$90/mo per fee-earner, replaces most of the drafting and admin that partners currently do late in the evening.
Larger firms (15+): add Caseware or CCH iFirm to that stack for compliance standardisation, plus BGL if you’re SMSF-heavy.
Where to start
Start with Claude Pro for a month, apply it to three specific workflows (client update letters, management commentary drafting, BAS or meeting follow-ups), and measure the time saved. If it doesn’t save 3+ hours a week per fee-earner in month one, you’re using it wrong. Our accounting training page covers the specific workflows.
Where we deliver: Claude Cowork training is delivered remotely via Google Meet to Australian teams anywhere in the country — see Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Gold Coast, and Hobart, or all Australian locations.
