Short answer: Yes — Claude writes UK-format CVs well. Give it your existing CV (or a few bullet points about your experience) plus the job description you’re applying for, and it produces a tailored CV in minutes. British English, UK conventions (no photo, no DOB, education after experience for experienced hires), and tailored to the specific role rather than generic.
Short version: Claude is one of the best AI tools for writing a CV in 2026. It handles UK conventions properly (we write "CV" not "resume", no photo, no date of birth, two pages for experienced hires, education after work experience). More importantly, it tailors the CV to a specific job description rather than producing something generic that applies to everyone and no-one.
This guide covers the three ways to use Claude for your CV, four prompts for different situations, and what Claude is honestly not great at.
Three ways to use Claude for your CV
1. Rewrite an existing CV for a specific role
You have a CV. You've found a job you want. Paste both into Claude:
Prompt: "Here is my current CV: [paste]. Here is the job description I'm applying for: [paste]. Rewrite my CV to be tailored to this role. Keep every true statement, remove or de-emphasise anything irrelevant, use the same keywords from the job description where honestly accurate, and format for UK conventions (two pages max, no photo, no DOB, education after experience). British English throughout."
2. Build a CV from bullet points
You don't have a CV, or your current one is years out of date. Give Claude the raw material:
Prompt: "Help me build a CV from scratch. Here's what I've done: [list roles, companies, dates, 3-5 bullet points of what you did and achieved in each]. Here's my education: [list]. Here are the skills I want to highlight: [list]. Build a UK-format CV targeting [role type]. British English."
3. Fix the gap or awkward bit
Everyone's CV has one. Career break, redundancy, short tenures, change of industry. Ask Claude for help framing it honestly:
Prompt: "I have a [length] gap on my CV between [date] and [date] because [reason — honestly]. Help me frame this on the CV in a way that's completely honest, doesn't make it sound evasive, and if possible shows what I did productively during that time. Suggest 2-3 ways to phrase it."
What Claude is excellent at for CV writing
- Tailoring to a job description — identifies the keywords and competencies from the posting and surfaces matching parts of your experience
- UK conventions — CV not resume, no photo, no DOB, two pages, education after experience, achievements over duties
- Tightening wordy bullets — "I was responsible for managing a team" → "Led a team of 8, delivering X project ahead of schedule"
- Impact-first phrasing — starting bullets with verbs and numbers where possible
- Industry-specific tone — a CV for a solicitor reads differently from one for a startup PM, and Claude handles both
What Claude is NOT great at (and will try to help with anyway if you let it)
- Making up achievements — Claude will embellish if you let it. Push back: "don't add anything I didn't tell you. If my bullet is thin, help me write it stronger using only what I actually did, not what sounds impressive."
- Guessing numbers — "Increased revenue by 40%" sounds great. If you don't actually know the number, tell Claude to use a factual qualitative version instead.
- UK sector-specific norms you haven't told it about — e.g. the civil service CV format, academic CVs (CV conventions vary a lot in academia), or regulated-industry conventions. Tell Claude explicitly if your sector has specific requirements.
- Formatting the final PDF — Claude outputs text, not a styled document. Paste the output into Word or Google Docs and apply your preferred template.
CV writing in Claude vs other AI tools
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot also write CVs. In our testing with UK users, Claude produces tighter, less-salesy, less-American-sounding output by default. ChatGPT tends toward over-enthusiastic phrasing; Copilot defaults to American conventions; Gemini is good but requires more prompting to stay UK-focused.
For a one-off CV: any of them will do a good job if you prompt them well. For regular use (recruiter, hiring manager, careers coach writing lots of CVs): Claude's Projects feature lets you save a reusable voice guide once and get consistent output every time.
