Short answer: Yes. Claude reads PDFs natively — you drag one in and ask questions. Both text-based PDFs (contracts, invoices, reports) and scanned image-based PDFs (statements, receipts, handwritten notes) work. Standard plans handle up to 100 pages per upload; Claude Fable 5.1 handles up to 1 million tokens (roughly 1,000+ pages) in a single conversation.

How Claude reads PDFs (the mechanics)
There’s no third-party integration, no OCR service to plug in, no file conversion step. You:
- Open a Claude conversation (Claude.ai on desktop, mobile app, or the web interface)
- Drag your PDF into the chat window (or click the paperclip icon to upload)
- Wait 2-5 seconds for the file to process
- Ask whatever question you have — Claude reads the whole document as context
Under the hood, Claude uses a combination of text extraction (for PDFs with an underlying text layer) and vision (for scanned or image-based PDFs). You don’t need to know which one it’s using — both feel identical from your side.
What Claude does well with PDFs
Data extraction from structured documents
Bank statements, invoices, receipts, tax forms, purchase orders, delivery notes, insurance schedules. Claude pulls out the specific fields you need in whatever format you specify — a table, a CSV, structured JSON. This is the highest-volume use case for UK accountancy, property, and freight forwarding teams.
Contract and long-document review
Give Claude a 40-page lease, a shareholders’ agreement, or a set of tender documents and ask targeted questions about specific clauses. Summarisation
Board packs, meeting minutes, industry reports, legal judgments. Claude produces executive summaries, extracts action items, or generates plain-English explanations of technical documents. Better than reading them yourself if you’re time-poor.

Upload a PDF in any major language and ask Claude to translate. For business correspondence this is genuinely useful; for legally-binding translations (contracts filed with authorities), you still need a certified translator, but Claude gets you 90% of the way to understanding what the document says.
Comparison and reconciliation
Give Claude two versions of a document and ask what changed. Useful for contract negotiations, updated policy documents, or version control on important papers.

The same rule applies as any other client data you feed into Claude:
- Redact identifiable personal information before uploading — full account numbers, National Insurance numbers, medical record numbers, DOB with address, signatures. Preview on Mac has a rectangle tool that does this in 60 seconds per document; flatten via File → Export → PDF.
- On paid plans, Anthropic doesn’t train on your data — contractual, not a promise. But treat it with the same care you would any third-party tool.
