Two things UK IFAs need to know before rolling out Claude across the practice.
FCA guidance on AI in financial services (2024) permits AI-assisted drafting where a qualified human reviews and signs off before anything reaches the client. This mirrors your existing workflow with paraplanners — Claude is a faster paraplanner, not a replacement for the adviser’s regulated judgement. Set the pattern from day one: Claude drafts, adviser reviews, adviser signs.
On paid Claude Cowork plans, Anthropic doesn’t train on your data (contractual position, not just a promise). Standard practice: redact anything not strictly needed for the drafting task — full account numbers, specific balance figures if identifiable, National Insurance numbers. Client name plus initial-context is generally acceptable within your firm’s DPA. Larger firms often negotiate enterprise-level DPAs directly with Anthropic for additional assurance.
Also update your privacy notice to disclose AI-assisted drafting — increasingly expected under FCA Consumer Duty and best practice.
FAQ
Can UK IFAs use Claude compliantly?
Yes, when used as a drafting tool with human sign-off. Claude drafts suitability letters, meeting summaries, and client correspondence; the adviser reviews, verifies, and signs off before anything goes to client. This mirrors the existing FCA-compliant workflow with paraplanners — Claude is a faster paraplanner, not a replacement for the adviser’s regulated judgement.
Does Claude help with suitability letters?
Yes — often the single highest ROI use case for IFAs. Feed Claude the fact-find, the recommended solution, the reasons why, and your firm’s standard suitability letter template. Claude drafts the full letter in your firm’s voice with all the standard sections. Typical time saving: 90 min to 15 min per letter.
Is Claude GDPR-compliant for client financial data?
On paid Claude Cowork plans, Anthropic doesn’t train on your data (contractual). For financial data specifically: redact anything that isn’t strictly needed for the drafting task — full account numbers, National Insurance numbers, specific balances if identifiable. Client name plus initial-context is generally acceptable within your DPA.
Can Claude analyse client portfolios or performance data?
Yes — Claude analyses spreadsheet data well. Feed it a client’s portfolio spreadsheet and it produces the narrative commentary you’d write for a review meeting: performance vs benchmark, drift from target allocation, tax-efficiency observations. As always, the adviser’s judgement leads; Claude writes the narrative around your analysis.
